There are several species of bumblebees & they don’t all look exactly the same. Some are small, some are large, & some also have orange coloring on them. Bumblebees are similar to honeybees in that they pollinate & collect nectar, but they do not make honey

Bumblebees make a nest that looks like a ball of pods. The one characteristic is that they always build their nests in something soft. This could be in the insulation of your house, an old bird’s nest (make sure to clean out old bird nests from your bird houses!), compost piles, or in the ground in an old mouse nest. Nest sizes vary, but they are not nearly the size of a colony of honeybees (hundreds in a nest instead of thousands). They will defend their nests & can be aggressive (especially the orange ones). They are also best left to a professional. They don’t always build their nests near the entrance. They may be ten or fifteen feet away.

Store bought sprays are usually ineffective and can even make the problem worse. If they are in the wall of your house, the smell of the spray may cause them to scatter & look for another way out (which can end up being inside your house!).
